Easter and Optimism

"This dinner is disgusting"
"I'm soooo bored"
"I hate tidying"
"Get away"
"I don't care"
And it wasn't just coming from the kids.
"Ugh, I'm tired"
"This house is uninspiring"
"The noise is driving me crazy"
"Pick up your mess....PLEASE!"

By Easter Saturday, it had really got to me. There had been two (plus a few) days of negativity in our house, and my later-in-life found optimism was dissolving. Yes, once upon a time I was typically critical, cynical, and more than a dash negative (I am a realist and a thinker after all). I chose to change that thinking and I found a different, brighter enthusiasm for life.

Not because I naively hope that my life will get better or that I will achieve that optimum lifestyle. Not even because I hope that God will orchestrate my life getting better and get me to that point of perfection. But a realisation that God can bring victory through absurd defeat.
(He did it. The cross and the loss and the grave and the rising again.)

So on Easter Sunday I allowed that celebration of new life, of hope, of renewed spirit to filter through me and my imperfect household. It reminded me why I can have bad days and it reminded me why I can still be optimistic for the future among them. Hallelujah!

My Sister's Wedding

The family event of 2012.
The blessed and beautiful Bride.
The Groom with the grandest groodle surprise.
The sleepiest, snuggliest puppy Stanley.
The fairest of flower girls.
The bounty of blooms.
The darling decor.
The husband-to-be's handiwork.
The mouth-watering menu.
The tasty tiered cake.
The sentimental speeches.
The love: lavish, luminous and lasting.

You can (and should) see the fab photos here at Sweet Hope.
You can (and should) see the video from Bubblerock Studio here.
You'll be blown away by the love and beauty of the day.

But there were a few extra parts of the wedding that made it particularly special to me, and I want to make sure those memories are also kept in my mind for the years to come...

Setting up the reception area the day before the wedding was wonderful. The heady scent of flowers just increased the sense of anticipation in the air. It was relaxed and social and enjoyable (though there was much to do), and the last time I would spend time with my single sister.
The flowergirl dresses were designed to suit the personality of each of the girls. Elara's was a long empire line dress with butterfly ruffles on the straps and a tulle over skirt. India's was a short and flippy ra-ra dress. Both were made with a piece of vintage silk, perfectly matching the colour and look of the bride's gown. It was gifted to me by my Grandma years ago, and I was just waiting for the perfect occasion to use it. The girls day was made even more special with name engraved bracelets from the Groom.
Zeb's handmade tie and hat (and pants) made him look so grown up, and ready for his special job of handing the ring box to the Groom.
Elara wrote and gave some special advice for her Aunty and Uncle:
Dear Aunty Clare and Justin,
I have a thought of a few ideas to help you be good at being married.
Firstly, Aunty Clare, you need to: Give Justin presents that are good for a boy, like car or boat or fishing stuff;  Say ‘I love you’ lots of times; Cook nice dinners for Justin because I think you would be better at cooking than Justin; And go on fishing trips with Justin.

Uncle Justin, I have some ideas for you too. You need to: Tell Clare jokes and make her laugh; Give Clare massages; Give Clare manicures and pedicures, even if her feet are a bit smelly; Buy flowers for Clare, or pick some from the farm for her.

When you are married you definitely should:Be nice to each other; Do things together, instead of apart; Hug and kiss each other; Go to restaurants for dinner sometimes; Get a pet; And then have a baby, but don’t give it a mean name like Stinky Head!
With some guidance from the Bride, my baking sister Lauren and I wanted to create a rustic-but-hardly-regular looking wedding cake, and I think it looked beautiful on the day. But a stunning cake isn't nearly as memorable as a delicious one, so we set out to make this apple, cinnamon and caramel cake divine tasting. More than 2kg of apples and more than 2kg of sugar in this one made it moist and rich (and perhaps laden with dreams that involved running away to the country to grow apples and lie in the sun, or maybe that was just me?)
Above all, the friends and family and love surrounding made for the most meaningful memories. And this is exactly what a wedding celebration should be!

The Blue Giant

Three years ago, we bought Elara a pink trike.
We had two girls that loved pink.
We were yet to discover we were expecting a boy.
A boy who loves blue.

As the girls grew out of the trike and into their own two-wheelers, we knew it was time to pass the trike on to another family with girls. Or maybe not? We had really loved this little Giant. So, I decided to revamp it instead.
I pulled the trike to pieces.
Cleaned up as much of the rust as possible with wet alfoil.
Used masking tape to cover all the unpainted steel.
Spray painted the pink with metal primer.
Spray painted the primer with blue. Twice.
Put the pieces back together.
Tim shaped a new footboard out of wood, which we stained and attached.
Finally, we personalized it so that Zeb would know this trike was all for the boy!

A Japanese Sleepover

It was my first time as 'sleepover host'.
Four beautiful girls.
Some Japanese food.
Some crafting.
And six and a half hours sleep (for them).
It was awesome!
Here are the smaller details that made it fun...

The invitations were written by Elara, and were accompanied by a pair of Japanese style pyjamas for each girl. I thought it would be cute to see matching girls asleep (hopefully) on their bed of mattresses! The fabric only came to $4.20 for each pair so it's not as extravagant an idea as you might think!

They painted some dollar store fans to use throughout the night.

The table all set and ready, using noodle boxes, chopsticks, fans, origami paper, Japanese doll serviettes, and a bamboo steamer for serving.
Dinner was store bought sushi, sandwich sushi, and spring rolls.
With cupcakes for dessert!

They decorated cherry blossom canvases in the morning. My sister pre-painted the branches, and the girls used a flower shaped stamper with origami paper to make the flowers. Then they glued them on (all very differently) with pretty results.

It wouldn't be a party without some sweets!
I made these sushi treats from white chocolate crackle, and added lollies, sprinkles, rolls-ups and white chocolate 'mayonnaise'.
Then they all left (tired and happy) with their crafts and a few extra Japanese treats to remind them of their fun and colourful night.

Summary of a Girl of 7 years, By a Girl of 7 years

This morning, after she had woken up seven,
I asked this girl (who listed a Japanese dictionary as top of her birthday wish list), what she wanted to be when she grew up.
Her answer: "I want to be everything, Mum. And I want to do everything".
And that is her, in a nutshell.

Happy birthday Ellie!

Shine Bright

And I leaned over and whispered to her
'You're gonna shine bright like a diamond,
Shine bright like a diamond,
You're beautiful like diamonds in the sky'
